As a dice thrown onto a rugged surface, the extension for this 50’s house finds its place in a natural way following the old stone walls complementing the old building. Therefore the chosen design option was named Noppa, Finnish for dice.
The new built does not deny its modern nature and sits as an abstract box next to the old house establishing a contrasting dialogue between the two of them: new and dark, old and light. All of it in wood. The new composition borrows traditional elements such as the wooden lattices making a reference to the countryside architecture and uses them as solar protection in the south facades which open to the seaside landscape. The black lattice-like facade claddings together with the lattices create a unique character to the house.
In addition to the material choices the project makes an ecological choice by renovating the old house instead of demolishing it and building everything new.
